This year marks the 75th anniversary of Curious George; who – as we've come to know him and his adventures – has managed countless escapes from those who were subjected to his shenanigans. What most people don't know is that the creators made an escape more daring than any of the monkey's mischief put together.

Artists Hans Augusto and Margret Rey created what is internationally known today as Curious George when living in Paris in 1939. Though originally named Fifi as a side character, the couple realized that he deserved his own story.

Their aspirations were soon interrupted after the Nazis invaded France. The Reys – German-born Jews – were forced to make a run for it. The couple fled in 1940 on self-made bicycles, carrying the first Curious George manuscript with them, until they finally reached an operating train.

The Reys eventually made their way to New York City, where Curious George made his debut. Fast-forward 75 years, and Curious George has become a global icon, selling over 75 million books in more than 16 languages. His trademark inquisitiveness and love for mischief has connected with children consistently over the years.

Author James Collins has said that "the ultimate driving force is curiosity… Be like Curious George, start with a question and look under the yellow hat to find what's there." For George and his fans, the quest for knowledge and understanding will continue!
